Join us at the Cora Hartshorn Arboretum for a captivating family program “Native Tales and Crafts.” This educational and fun-filled program is designed to immerse explorers young and old in the rich history and cultural heritage of the local Native Americans, specifically the Lenni Lenape.
The day begins with an enthralling story that transports listeners to a time when storytelling was the primary means of describing the world and passing on knowledge among indigenous peoples. Led by passionate volunteers from the Cora Hartshorn Arboretum and Dr. Scott Henning, a member of the Mackinac Band, Ojibwe Indians, these stories will captivate young minds and ignite imaginations.
Following the storytelling, we venture into the forest to see an example of a Lenape hunting shelter. Explorers will gain firsthand insights into the customs and traditions of this ancient culture.
But the adventure doesn’t end there! Participants will also have a hands-on experience learning the art of basket weaving. With the guidance of Dr. Scott Henning, children will craft their very own baskets to take home as a keepsake of this memorable day.
While the program is designed for children and their families, we encourage parents or guardians participate and share in the learning experience.
“Native Tales and Crafts Adventure” promises to be an enriching and enjoyable program that connects children with the past, inspires creativity, and fosters an appreciation for the cultural heritage of the local Native American communities. Don’t miss this chance to create lasting memories and a beautiful basket to cherish!
